Kofi Adams Vows to Support Retired Footballers and Address Sports Sector Debt
Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has pledged to implement measures aimed at improving the welfare of retired footballers if approved for the position.
Speaking during his vetting on January 30, Adams acknowledged the financial and health struggles faced by many former players, stressing the need for structured support.
“We will encourage active sportsmen to contribute to a pension scheme. If I am approved, we will come out with modalities to see what we can do for those who have retired,” he assured.
His remarks came in response to a question from Weija-Gbawe MP, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, who sought clarity on plans for retired athletes.
Tackling Financial Challenges in Sports
Beyond retired footballers, Adams also addressed broader financial concerns within the sports sector. He acknowledged the significant debt burden facing the industry and promised to engage key stakeholders to develop solutions.
“I’m aware of the GHC468 million debt that must be dealt with. We will strategize to ensure that the National Sports Authority (NSA) plays its role as regards Black Stars funding to resolve the issues,” he stated.
With expectations high, Adams’ approval could signal a renewed focus on both the welfare of retired athletes and the financial stability of Ghana’s sports sector.
