Sam George Vows to Reintroduce Anti-LGBTQ Bill In 9th Parliament
The Minister-designate for Communications, Digitalization, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed his commitment to pushing for the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ Bill in the 9th Parliament.
During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025, Sam George emphasized his unwavering stance against LGBTQ+ activities, stressing that the bill is essential for upholding Ghanaian cultural values and societal norms.
“This is a matter of principle and national interest. The Anti-Gay Bill is not about discrimination but about safeguarding our moral and cultural values as a nation,” he asserted.
He argued that while Ghana respects human rights, certain practices contradict the country’s long-held traditions and beliefs.
“My position remains unchanged—this bill is crucial to our national identity. We must protect Ghanaian family values and the innocence of our children. In this 9th Parliament, I will ensure its reintroduction, whether as a private member’s bill or a government-sponsored one. Either way, I will see to it that it is brought back,” he declared.
He further emphasized the support he has received from traditional leaders, particularly those from Nyingwa and Prampram, stating, “My chiefs supported me in introducing this bill in the 8th Parliament. If they ask me to reintroduce it in the 9th Parliament, I will honor that request.”
Addressing concerns raised by international organizations, Mr. George dismissed external pressures, insisting that Ghana has the sovereign right to formulate and enforce its own laws.
As the leading advocate among Members of Parliament championing the bill, he noted that despite parliamentary approval, former President Akufo-Addo declined to assent to it, preventing it from becoming law. He reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with Parliament and relevant stakeholders to ensure the bill’s passage.
