Vetting chaos Committee will resume work on Feb 7; in-camera hearing for ‘culprits’ – Bedzrah
Following an indefinite suspension on Wednesday, February 5, the Adhoc Committee investigating the vetting chaos is set to reconvene its hearings on Friday, February 7, 2025.
The Committee will first hold a public session for witnesses, followed by a closed-door hearing for Members of Parliament who were allegedly responsible for damage to state property.
Committee Chairman Emmanuel Bedzrah confirmed the schedule during an interview on TV3’s New Day on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
“We will be holding a press briefing today to update Ghanaians on our next steps. As it stands, we will resume tomorrow (Friday) with the public hearings for witnesses,” Bedzrah stated.
“The second phase will involve an in-camera hearing with the MPs deemed responsible. They will be presented with video evidence before we compile our findings and submit a report to Parliament,” he added.
The Committee’s initial hearing on January 30 was abruptly halted when the Clerk to Parliament withdrew his staff, citing a lack of formal approval from the Speaker to continue proceedings.
However, speaking on TV3’s New Day, Bedzrah accused the Minority caucus of engineering the disruption. He alleged that Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin had misled the Clerk, falsely asserting that Speaker Bagbin had instructed the suspension.
“I reached out to the Majority Leader and engaged other parliamentary leaders, including the two deputies, the Clerk, and my committee members, to clarify the situation,” Bedzrah explained. “The Minority Leader then admitted that they had approached the Speaker beforehand, requesting a suspension. When the Speaker later reversed that decision, they were caught off guard.”
With the hearings set to resume, all eyes will be on the Committee as it navigates this politically charged investigation.
